The Titmus Fly Test is a widely used tool for assessing stereoscopic depth perception in patients of all ages. This test is designed to measure how accurately the two eyes can discern differences in the distances of objects, which is crucial for diagnosing and managing various visual disorders

The Titmus Fly Test includes three levels of testing: the House Fly, the series of animals, and the circle patterns

House Fly: This test establishes the presence of gross stereopsis and is particularly useful for young children who may have difficulty understanding instructions. The large central mass and translucent wings make the fly an ideal stereoscopic subject.

Animals: This series facilitates testing younger children whose visual systems have not fully developed. The patient is asked to identify the animal in each row that appears to be “jumping off the page.”

Circles: The circle patterns provide a finely graded sequence for critical testingThe patient is asked to indicate which circle seems to come out closer to them.

Administering the Titmus Fly Test is straightforward. The booklet should be held upright 40 cm from the patient’s face, and polarized viewers must be worn over any habitual correction

Proper illumination is essential to avoid shadows or reflections on the booklet

The Titmus Fly Test is effective for evaluating stereoscopic depth perception, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various visual disorders. Its ease of use and reliability make it a valuable tool for optometrists and ophthalmologists.
